The Mirage was developed to be a ground up, domestically produced and fiercely competitive ARA RC2 competitor.

The Mitsubishi Mirage was hand selected for its nimble platform. Thompson Racing Fabrication was on hand through the design and selection and created the Frankenstein machine in their labs in Michigan. What emerged bore little resemblance to the class B commuter car.
